Amitabh Bachchan is referred to as the Shahenshah of Bollywood, Sadi ka Mahanayak, Star of the Millennium, or Big B, and has appeared in more than 200 Indian films over a career spanning more than five decades. Bachchan is considered to be one of the best actors in the history of Indian cinema. In addition to acting, Bachchan worked as a playback singer, film producer and TV presenter.

Bachchan made his film debut in 1969 as a voice narrator in the award-winning film Bhuvan Shome. His first acting role was in the movie Saat Hindustani. Eventually, Bachchan became one of the most influential film industry figures. After a three-year run in politics from 1984 to 1987, he returned to film in 1988, playing the title role in Shahenshah. Bachchan became a producer during his 5-year temporary retirement period, setting up Amitabh Bachchan Corporation, Ltd. (ABCL) in 1996. In 2000, he starred in the box-office hit Mohabbatein. His role won him his third film fare award for Best Supporting Actor & several hits followed throughout the decade. The same year, Bachchan hosted the first season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, an Indian adaptation of the British television game, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? In 2013, he made his Hollywood debut at The Great Gatsby, making a special appearance next to Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Bachchan starred with Rishi Kapoor in 102 Not Out, a comedy-drama film in 2018. He's known for his deep, baritone voice. He was a narrator, a playback singer, and a presenter for many programmes. In 2020, Bachchan helped the Government of India to promote its public health message concerning Covid-19.

In addition to the National Film Awards, the Filmfare Awards and other competitive awards that Bachchan has won for his performances over the years, he has received numerous honours for his achievements in the Indian film industry. The Government of India awarded him Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015. France's highest civil title, the Knight of the Legion of Honour, was bestowed on him by the French Government in 2007 for his 'exceptional career in the world of cinema and beyond.' He became the first Asian living to be modelled in wax at the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London and was also awarded the Medal of Honour of Morocco by King Mohammed at the Marrakech International Film Festival.
