Named after a Chinese friend whose name had a homophonic sound with the Mandarin word 'bandstand,' the Ting Tings — a scrappy, dance-oriented duo consisting of singer/guitarist Katie White and drummer Jules De Martino — was formed in the Salford district of Manchester, England in 2006. Before the band was created, the pair worked together in 2001 when White was in the all-female punk-pop band TKO, and De Martino wrote some songs for them. Later, the duo reunited, and with another friend formed the Eskimo Kiss trio, which had signed to Mercury Records but had dissolved, partially due to a change of staff on the label.
The Ting Tings are an indie duo from Salford, England. Their debut single, 'That's Not My Name,' rose to the top of the U.K. charts in May 2008. Their album, We Started Nothing, sold over two million copies worldwide and won the 2009 Ivor Novello Award for Best Album. Their fourth LP, The Black Light, was released in October of this year. For the next four years, the band remained quiet until resurfacing in early 2018. The group remained silent for four years before resurfacing with their comeback single 'Blacklight' in September of 2018.
