Gorillaz is a British virtual band by musician Damon Albarn and an artist Jamie Hewlett. Gorillaz debuted as the first 'virtual hip-hop group.' Creator Jamie Hewlett created the visuals for the group. The group's virtual members include 2-D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle & their music is inspired by 'Farrakhan and Chaka Khan,' according to the group's website. It was produced by Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura, Blur's Damon Albarn, and Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori.
Gorillaz debuted in late 2000 with the Tomorrow Comes Today EP. The group's self-titled full-length debut album arrived in spring 2001. Gorillaz achieved platinum-level sales in the U.S. Worldwide; the album sold over seven million copies. In early 2020, the band began issuing singles and music videos as part of a conceptual project called Song Machine. The project is the brainchild of frontman Damon Albarn and musician Jamie Hewlett. The first single debuted in early 2020.
