Absolutely cosmopolitan with international grooves to spare, Heatwave emerged as one of the funkiest dance groups in the disco era. The American serviceman brothers Johnnie Wilder and his brother Keith Wilder were based in Germany when they first began playing. When they were discharged from the Army, the duo stayed in that country. Both singers, the pair gigged in clubs and bars with several bands while still enlisted. They were always trying to extend their horizons and moved to the U.K. in the middle of the year to get in touch with songwriter/keyboardist Rod Temperton.
The band formed in London in the early '70s. They had several hit singles, including 'Ain't No Half Steppin' and 'Super Soul Sister.' In 1991, the band was rendered inactive, and for all intents disbanded. The Wilder brothers resurfaced in 1989 with the album Sound of Soul on Blatant. In 1997, the reborn Heatwave launched a U.S. tour with a live album, Live at the Greek Theater. The band last toured in 1997 and has not played since.
