Monica Denise Brown is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and businessman. She started singing as a child, and at the age of ten, she became part of a travelling gospel choir. Monica rose to fame after signing with Rowdy Records in 1993 and releasing her debut album, Miss Thang, two years later. Monica sold 5.3 million albums in the United States and is recognised as one of the most successful urban R&B female vocalists to emerge in the mid-1990s.
Monica made her debut in 1995 with the Platinum Top Ten singles 'Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)' and 'Before You Walk Out of My Life.' She recorded another killer duet, 'The Boy Is Mine,' in 1998 and her second album of the same name. Monica had scored a few more chart successes in the years that followed. The much-delayed After the Storm hit stores in 2003 and reached the top of the Billboard 200, while the next Makings of Me took three years to materialise. Still Standing, released in 2010, was preceded by a BET reality series of the same name. She followed that success in 2012 with New Life, which featured her re-pairing with Brandy on the single 'It All Belongs to Me.' Code Red, previewed with tracks like 'Just Right for Me' and 'Hustler's Ambition,' was released near the end of 2015. Monica released the ballad 'Be Human' to introduce The Be Human Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by herself in 2018. Also, in 2019 she released 'Commitment', the first single on her label, Mondeenise Music. Monica and Brandy appeared on the webcast battle series Verzuz which took place in August 2020, at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
