After starting out as an abrasive post-punk band, Chromatics grew into one of the most influential electro-pop acts of its kind. On studio albums such as Night Drive and Kill for Love, as well as on a number of film and television soundtracks, the band's evocative blend of Italo-disco, post-punk, and 80's pop was exotic, heart-breaking, and distinctive.
Adam Miller created Chromatics in Portland, Oregon, as a solo project in 2001. By the time the single released, Miller had switched to vocals. Guitarist Devin Welch and future Gossip drummer Hannah Blilie also joined the band. This release of the group's 2003 debut album, Chrome Rats vs Basement Rutz. For the 2004 Plaster Hounds, Miller soon played these songs with a drum machine and Lena Okazaki on bass. Chromatics' much-anticipated fourth full-length, Kill for Love, appeared in early 2012. Various one-off singles and EPs tided over fans until the surprise release of fifth album Closer to Grey in October 2019.
