Mixing smooth R&B vocals with hip-hop grooves, Akon first gained fame with the single 'Locked Up,' from his debut album, Trouble, in 2004 that went platinum, a certification reached several times on subsequent releases, including the 2006 Konvicted and 2008 Freedom albums. Born in the family of African musicians, he has always been grateful for the musical heritage of his family as it paved the way for his success in the American music industry. He gradually developed an interest in hip-hop music and culture. Akon has won many awards for his albums throughout his career. He has also made many hits by collaborating with world-famous musicians such as Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie.

With the release of his debut album 'Trouble' in 2004, Akon's life transformed almost overnight into an international star. The album was a massive success and produced many hit singles including 'Locked Up,' 'Bananza (Belly Dance),' 'Ghetto,' and 'Lonely.' He started his own labels, 'Kon Live Distribution' and 'Konvict Muzic.' In November 2006, he released his second album 'Kon Live Distribution' on his own label. Akon sang a song called 'Chammak Challo' for the soundtrack of a Hindi movie called 'Ra.One,' starring Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor. In 2011, he collaborated with the famous Indian music director duo Vishal-Shekhar for the album. In 2019, he released his first Latin single, 'Get Money,' featuring the Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA. The same year, he also released 'Cómo No,' featuring the Mexican-American singer Becky G. He is also the founder of the 'Konfidence Foundation.'
