How Did The Gathering Redefine Rock Throughout the Years?

Harmony Echoes · Posted on May 11th, 2024

Evolution is at the heart of progress, and no band exemplifies this concept quite like The Gathering. This Dutch rock group was founded in Oss, North Brabant, in 1989 by brothers Hans and René Rutten, along with vocalist Bart Smits. What started as atmospheric doom metal with hints of Celtic Frost and Hellhammer took a sharp turn into experimental territory with the release of their fifth studio album, 'How to measure a planet?', in 1998.

The Gathering's journey through shoegazing, post-rock, and trip-hop elements is a testament to their adaptability and artistic bravery. Bands like 4AD's Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins, as well as the ethereal aspects of Pink Floyd and Massive Attack, began influencing their sound, resulting in a broader appeal that transcended European borders.

Fans faced a poignant shift when in 2007 Anneke van Giersbergen departed to pursue her solo project, Agua de Annique. However, the band's spirit continued with Silje Wergeland from Octavia Sperati joining the lineup in 2009. Their album 'Disclosure', released in 2012, showcased their unceasing creative evolution.

Despite going on hiatus in 2014 and band member Marjolein Kooijman leaving, The Gathering celebrated their 25-year legacy with a unique live show featuring past and present members, encapsulated in a live album in 2015.
