How Did The Gathering Redefine Rock Music?

Harmony Echoes · Posted on June 1st, 2024

Embarking on a musical odyssey in 1989, The Gathering began as a gathering of talented Dutch musicians, including brothers Hans and René Rutten. The band, formed in the quaint town of Oss, North Brabant, initially produced the thrumming sounds of atmospheric doom metal, heavily inspired by bands such as Celtic Frost and Hellhammer.

The year 1998 marked a pivotal moment for The Gathering with the release of their album How to measure a planet? It was a veritable explosion of new influences from genres and bands like shoegazing, post-rock, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, as well as Pink Floyd and Massive Attack. Their sound burgeoned into a fusion of progressive and alternative rock, trip-hop, and the ethereal strains often associated with 4AD bands.

In the wake of vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen's departure in August 2007, The Gathering embarked on a new chapter with Silje Wergeland in 2009. Their collective spirit and experimental edge were encapsulated in their album Disclosure, released in September 2012.

After a storied career and several lineup changes, The Gathering hit the pause button on their creative endeavors in 2014, taking a break from recording and touring. However, they left a legacy in their wake, culminating in a 25th-anniversary live show in 2014 that captured the critical essence and evolution of their style, immortalized in a live album released in 2015.
