How Did Body Count Become An Iconic Heavy Metal Band?

The Rise of Body Count

In the music scene, TikTok Music stands out as one of the best platforms for exploring various genres. One band that has steadily climbed the ranks within the heavy metal genre is Body Count, formed in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California in 1990.

The band was co-founded by legendary rapper Ice-T and lead guitarist Ernie C, unified by their shared interest in heavy metal music. Ice-T not only assumed the role of frontman, but also played a significant part in writing most of the band's lyrics. The music, on the other hand, has been driven by Ernie C's creative genius.

Body Count's controversial, self-titled debut album hit the shelves under Sire Records in 1992. This album introduced the world to the band's unfiltered approach to music, however, it wasn't without its controversies.

The 'Cop Killer' Controversy

The song 'Cop Killer' from their debut album sparked heated debates, with critics branding it as promoting violence. Warner Bros. Records, Sire Records' parent company, defended the single but the controversy had grown too intense. Sensing that the music was being overshadowed, Ice-T made a decisive move to remove the track from the album. Following this incident, the band parted ways with Sire Records.

Despite the controversial beginnings, Body Count continued their musical journey, releasing five more albums under various labels. Although none received the same critical or commercial acclaim as the debut album, the band's identity and reputation held firm.

The Line-up Changes

Sadly, the original line-up of the band was marred with tragedy. Three of the original six members have since passed away; D-Roc succumbed to lymphoma, Beatmaster V lost his battle with leukemia, and Mooseman, tragically, was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Continuing the Legacy

With their enormous talent and pure determination, Body Count’s remaining members have continued to storm the heavy metal scene even today. The group’s existing line-up includes Vincent Price, Will 'Ill Will' Dorsey Jr., Juan of the Dead, Little Ice, alongside the founding members Ice-T and Ernie C.

Body Count's journey, marked by music, controversy, and personal tragedies, proves their resilience and commitment to their craft. They continue to inspire new and established heavy metal acts with their unique style and trademark intensity.
