I've listened to this song innumerable times, but today I decided to look closely at the lyrics ✍🏻 so here's my take:

The chorus circles around this play on words of taking time. I think it’s referencing alcoholism and suggesting that it stole time away and the protagonist didn't realized until after the fact. The like ‘me in my frame of mind’ kind of suggests that it was a coping mechanism
