The trio of Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill was Houston's down-and-dirty blues band. Despite their deep origins in American rock & roll and blues, ZZ Top was the furthest among purists. There was no fad they didn't use, twisting new waves, synthesising dance-rock, and creating music videos for their own purposes. Both their hooks and riffs were rolled up in a grin masked as bushy beards and dazzling showmanship.
The band released their first album, named ZZ Top's First Album, in 1971. With blues-inspired rock, the trio later incorporated new waves, punk rock and dance-rock using synthesisers. Their songs are considered to contain satirical lyrics laced with double sounds and innuendo. The band's best-selling album, Eliminator, was released in 1983 and sold more than 10 million copies in the United States. According to the Recording industry association of America, cumulative album sales of 25 million ZZ Top placed among the top-100-selling artists in the United States. That includes 11 gold, 7 platinum and three multi-platinum albums as of 2016, according to the RIAA. ZZ Top sold more than 50 million albums worldwide by 2014. ZZ Top was introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
