Polly Jean Harvey is one of the most distinctive and influential songwriters of her era. Her 2001 album Stories from the City earned her the Mercury Prize as she explored themes of sex, religion, and political issues with unnerving honesty, dark humour, and a twisted theatricality. Her music is eclectic, from trip-hop to guitar rock to troubadourism. She won a second Mercury Prize in 2011, making her the only artist to have done so.
Harvey started her career in 1988 when she joined the local band Automatic Dlamini. The frontman of the band, John Parish, would later be a long-term collaborator. Three years later, she formed an eponymous trio and began her professional career. The trio released two studio albums, Dry (1992) and Rid of Me (1993) before disbanding, after which Harvey remained a solo artist. She has released nine more studio albums with collaborations from different artists since. In 2020, Harvey embarked on an ambitious reissue campaign of her work that included demo versions of each of her albums and new artwork. Dry was reissued that July, with Rid of 4-Track Demos following in August and Me and To Bring You My Love, in September.
