(Sandy) Alex G is the stage alias of Alex Giannascoli, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who built his reputation with intimate lo-fi pop that combines strong melodic sensibilities with a ragged, impulsive-sounding performance style. He is also known for diversions into recording experiments and noise. After releasing a dozen combined albums and EPs on his own or on smaller labels, his Domino Records debut, 2015's Beach Music, landed on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and led to guitar spots for Frank Ocean. He retained his idiosyncratic, turbulent style even as he began working with collaborators, expanding his sound, and working in studios, as on 2019's House of Sugar.
As a teenager, Giannascoli, a Pennsylvania native, wrote and recorded music in his bedroom. In 2011, Giannascoli enrolled at Temple University, where he studied English, but eventually dropped out to pursue a musical career. After self-releasing various albums, EPs and singles on Bandcamp in 2010–2012, Giannascoli's popularity spread through word of mouth, blogs, and reverence by musicians. Orchid Tapes signing Giannascoli to their roster, and the release of his label debut, DSU (2014), which garnered acclaim from music critics. Following the release of the album, Giannascoli went on a tour throughout North America and Europe. In 2015, Giannascoli signed with Domino Recording Company and released his debut with the label and sixth overall studio album, Beach Music, on October 9. The following year, Giannascoli worked with Frank Ocean on his albums Endless and Blonde, providing guitars and arrangements for several songs.
