Bio

Alokesh 'Bappi' Lahiri is known for having popularized the use of synthesised disco music in Indian cinema. His parents Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri, both famous Bengali singers and musicians in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. Lahiri began to play the tabla at the age of 3.

Life & Career

Famous for his uptempo and dance songs, Bappi received his first opportunity in a Bengali film, Daadu (1972) and the first Hindi film for which he composed music was Nanha Shikari (1973). Bappi's soundtracks also reproduced and often sampled familiar sounds from the international market. While he was known for his disco-style songs, he also wrote some melodic songs, such as the songs by Chalte Chalte and Zakhmee. In late 2016, Bappi voiced the character of Tamatoa in the Hindi-dubbed version of Disney's 3D computer-animated fantasy adventure film Moana. Apart from being a renowned singer, Bappi has had tried his hands in politics as well.
