With their angst-filled hybrid of Van Morrison, the Band, and R.E.M., Counting Crows became an overnight sensation in 1994. Only a year earlier, the band was a group of unknown musicians, filling in for the absent Van Morrison at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony; they were introduced by an enthusiastic Robbie Robertson.
Counting Crows is an American rock band from Berkeley, California, formed in 1991. They gained popularity following the release of its debut album, August and Everything After (1993), which featured the hit single "Mr. Jones". They have sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. The band received two Grammy Awards nominations in 1994, one for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal (for "Round Here") and one for Best New Artist. They also received a 2004 Academy Award nomination for their song "Accidentally in Love", which was included in the film Shrek 2. In January 2019, the band released a newly recorded version of "August and Everything After" performed with the London Symphony Orchestra at Air Studios. The song was the title track from their first album that was originally cut. On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Counting Crows among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.
