Bio

Jason Swinscoe, who founded his first group, Crabladder, as an art student at Cardiff College in 1990, leads the wonderfully named Cinematic Orchestra. Swinscoe was encouraged to explore further the possibilities of sampling by Crabladder 's combination of jazz and hardcore punk elements with experimental rhythms. By the time of the group's demise in the mid-'90s, he was DJing at different clubs and private radio stations in the UK.

Life & Career

Swinscoe's music melded the '60s and '70s jazz, orchestral soundtracks, rhythm loops, and live instrumentation. The Cinematic Orchestra let a group of live musicians improvise over sampled percussion or bass lines. Their full-length debut, Motion, arrived in 1999 to great acclaim. Every Day, the second album followed in 2002, with vocal features for Fontella Bass and Roots Manuva. Live at the Royal Albert Hall was released in spring 2008. The group last released the single 'To Believe' in 2016, featuring Roots Manuva, Heidi Vogel, Tawiah, and Grey Reverend.
